NDIS

Navigating the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funds disability supports for eligible people. This page explains what the NDIS is, who may be eligible and how to apply. You’ll also find information about advocacy services available in Queensland.

The NDIS and Myhorizon

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for eligible people with disability to access supports related to their disability and work towards their goals.

The NDIS is designed to give you choice and control over your supports. Depending on how your funding is managed and the type of support, you can choose the providers you work with and how your supports are delivered.

Your NDIS plan is based on your individual circumstances and support needs. Funding may help you build skills, take part in work, study or social activities, and access disability supports that meet the NDIS funding criteria.

Myhorizon is a registered NDIS provider. We can help you understand how our services may fit with the funding in your plan.

The practical detail

Who can join
To apply for the NDIS, you must be under 65 and live in Australia. You also need to be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or Protected Special Category Visa holder. You may be eligible if you have a permanent impairment that significantly affects your ability to do everyday activities and you’re likely to need NDIS supports for your lifetime.
  1. How to check

The NDIS has an eligibility checklist on its website to help you understand whether you may be eligible. You can work through it yourself before you apply.

Advocacy Supports

If you need help making a difficult decision, resolving a problem, making a complaint or understanding your rights, an independent disability advocate may be able to support you.

An advocate can help you understand your rights, navigate the NDIS and other services, address discrimination or unfair treatment, resolve problems with services, make informed decisions and build confidence to speak up for yourself. They can also connect you with other disability, legal or community services when needed.

The Queensland Disability Advocacy Program funds organisations that provide advocacy services to Queenslanders with disability, as well as their family members and carers.

Yes. Myhorizon is a registered NDIS provider, approved by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. You can check our registration on the Commission's provider register, where we're listed as Myhorizon Ltd.

What are my rights when I use an NDIS provider?

You have the right to safe, competent and respectful support. You have the right to make informed choices, have control over your supports, have your privacy protected and raise a concern or complaint without fear. You can also involve an independent advocate. If you cannot resolve a concern with a provider, you can contact the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

What are the three ways to manage NDIS funding?

NDIS funding can be self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. If you self-manage, you pay providers and keep the records. If your funding is plan-managed, a registered plan manager does this for you. If it is NDIA-managed, the NDIA pays registered providers. Different parts of one plan can use different management options.

What can I use my NDIS funding for?

You can use your funding for NDIS supports included in your plan. Each support must relate to your disability, help you work towards your goals, be value for money, be effective and beneficial, and meet the other reasonable and necessary criteria. NDIS funding does not cover ordinary day-to-day living costs, event or holiday costs, illegal or harmful items, or income replacement. Check your plan and the NDIS supports list before you spend your funding.

What's a disability advocate?

A disability advocate is independent of your service provider and helps you understand and exercise your rights. They may help you speak up, make a complaint, work through an NDIS or service issue, or find legal and other support. You can choose whether to involve an advocate.
