Questions people ask us

What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding for a support worker to help or supervise you at home 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It may suit you if you need active support with daily activities for at least eight hours a day and some support or supervision at other times, including overnight. Support may be shared or one-to-one, depending on your needs and funding.

Is Supported Independent Living suitable if I only need drop-in support?

Usually not. Supported Independent Living is for people who need support or supervision 24 hours a day. If you only need targeted support at certain times, assistance with daily life or another home and living option may suit you better. Talk to your support coordinator about the right funding option. You can also ask us what Myhorizon can provide.

Can I have a say in who I live with and who supports me?

Yes. In shared living, your needs, preferences and situation must be considered when vacancies are filled. Your provider must also make reasonable efforts to involve you in choosing your support workers, including the preferred gender of workers who provide personal care. Ask us how matching and worker choice would work for a specific vacancy.

Does Supported Independent Living include my housing?

No. Supported Independent Living pays for support workers in your home; it does not pay for the home itself. You are responsible for rent, groceries, utilities and other ordinary living costs. Some people receive Supported Independent Living in a home they already live in, while others live in a shared home. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a separate type of NDIS funding for eligible people who need a specially designed home. Call us on 1300 694 674 and we can explain how both work.

How do I find out about a Supported Independent Living vacancy?

We list our current vacancies on this page. If nothing is listed, call us on 1300 694 674 and tell us what you need.

How do I get Supported Independent Living funding in my NDIS plan?

Talk to your my NDIS contact about your home and living goals and the support you need each day and overnight. The NDIA will consider evidence about your day-to-day support needs and decide which home and living option meets the funding criteria. A support coordinator may also help you explore providers and put approved supports in place.

What does Myhorizon's Supported Independent Living service include?

We can provide help or supervision with daily tasks at home, including personal care, preparing meals, cleaning, routines, medication, appointments and building independent living skills. We agree on the support with you and record it in your service agreement. Supported Independent Living does not cover rent, groceries, utilities or other ordinary living costs.
